Lavallette defends home surf

LAVALLETTE — Last Thursday’s weather proved to be the perfect atmosphere for Lavallette Beach Patrol’s annual Kemble-Treumuth Memorial lifeguard tournament. The thunder, lightning and rain held off and seven teams of six members were able to compete through seven different events until a beach patrol team was crowned this year’s champion.

ATLANTIC CITY — For the second year in a row Lavallette Beach Patrol was eliminated in the third round of the annual Red Bull Surf and Rescue lifeguard competition in Atlantic City.

The competition pits 40 teams of three males and one female from beach patrols along the Jersey Shore against each other through four elimination rounds, which culminates in an eight-team final round.

MANASQUAN — In a clash between 4-0 teams, Atlantic Physical Therapy wore down Turf’s Up with a 58-50 win on a brutally hot Saturday morning.

Despite being the first game of the day played at Curtis Park, temperatures were already hovering close to 90 degrees at tipoff time.

This may have played a role early on, especially for Atlantic Physical Therapy, which got off to a slow start.
